Face-lift and its many variations are designed to reverse the effects of aging, sun, weight fluctuation, hormonal changes and smoking on facial skin, fat and soft tissues, sinews and support ligaments. In order to provide a natural non-operated-on improvement to the facial skin , the surgeon should have an intimate knowledge of the anatomy of the layers of the facial soft tissues. This is because newer more effective techniques of face-lifting involve the tightening of layers of sinew and muscle deeper than the facial skin in addition to tightening the facial skin itself and removing excess skin. These newer techniques termed "deep-plane" face-lifting help avoid the "stretched" unnatural appearance which may result from skin-tightening-only procedures and provide a more naturally appearing rejuvination of the face with longer lasting results.

Face-lifting alone cannot always address all of the signs of facial aging. Some of the finer wrinkles and the wrinkles due to repeated muscle of facial expression movements may require additional concurrent treatment such as Botox injection, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing, chemical peel or injectable fillers. These options, if indicated, will be discussed at the time of your consultation.

In addition, less invasive techniques of facial rejuvination and limited face-lifting options exist and may be better suited for particular patients. As with all patients, the surgical option which best meets your cosmetic goals safely and comfortably can only be determined after a complete consultation and physical examination.

Before Surgery

Some issues considered at the time of your consultation include:

Your general health

Smoking

The specific areas of laxity and wrinkling of your skin, and deeper soft tissues (jowls, neckline, jawline, marionette lines, cheeks, areas around the eyes, brow)

The overall quality of your skin

How your facial muscles and nerves function

The position of your hairline which can affect the type of incision that best suits you

Some of the more common reasons patients seek consultation for a face-lift include:

Deep and superficial facial wrinkles around eyes, temples, mouth, cheeks, jawline and neck

Sallow cheeks

Droopy cheeks

Jowls

Marionette lines

Droopy chin

Loose hanging skin

"turkey-gobbler" neck

neck wrinkles or bands

droopy jawline

These concerns can be addressed with the various techniques of Face-lifting that an experienced and well-trained Plastic Surgeon with a clear knowledge of facial anatomy can offer.

The Surgery

Face-lift surgery can be performed under a general anaesthetic or under local anaesthetic with sedation. The patient may go home the same day. The details of the specific type of face-lift best suited to your specific aesthetic concerns and the placement of the incisions is determined and discussed at length during your consultation. Most face-lifting will involve incisions that are hidden in shadows and natural creases just in front of and behind the ears and in or behind the hairline. These incisions generally heal very well over time, and are well hidden.

Depending on the desired result and the complexity of your specific problem, this surgery may take anywhere from less than an hour (for masking procedures)  to more than four hours (for a deep-plane upper and lower face-lift) .

There are risks and complications with all surgical procedures such as bleeding and infection. These as well as other complications specific to face-lift surgery will be discussed at the time of consultation.

After Surgery

1st post-operative visit within 48 hours after surgery to remove dressings check for bleeding, level of discomfort, to answer any immediate concerns.

1st week after surgery; sutures are removed. Swelling has reached maximum, and has begun to subside, resume normal daily activities, no heavy lifting or working out.

10 -14 days after surgery: return to work, bruising gone, swelling reduced, "presentable", vigorous activity (exercise, heavy lifting) restricted

6 weeks after surgery: majority of swelling gone, resume normal exercising activity, lifting etc.
